Archie Houston was the son of Archibald Campbell Vance, bn. AL, and Minerva (Sinclair) VANCE, bn MS . Born in 1861, he was not two years old when his father went to War and was killed at Battle of Shiloh. He was the youngest of their four children, John F., Hester Elizabeth, Laura A. and A.Houston. His father, A.C., and grandfather, Wm. Houston VANCE, had obtained Land Patents in Lafayette & Pontotoc counties when the Mississippi Chickasaw lands opened for settlement in 1839-1849. After the War, when Reconstruction was in high gear in Mississippi, they and many families migrated out...they sold the land after they moved into SE Arkansas, then not staying there, when he was 18 yrs of age, in 1880, he was living with his mother, a widow, in Yell Co. Arkansas, just east of Indian Territory with other extended family. By 1895, he and his kinsmen, J.J. McNutt and Henry Morrison, applied for permits to enter and work in Indian Territory (I.T.)
After his mother died, abt 1896-7, he married Viola (Yarbrough) YOUNG, in 1899, a widow from Alabama, with three small children, whose husband had died after their removal to I.T. They moved from the Red Oak area in 1900, to the community of Non in Hughes County, OK. They farmed and raised the family there, losing three small children, and one surviving, Perry Alva.
A.H. was a faithful member of the Free Will Baptist church from the time of its organization until his death, and well respected in the community. He was a quiet and agreeable man, didn't say bad things about people, but tried to help if he could. His door was always open to a minister or traveller who needed a place to sleep or a place to eat a meal.
He died peacefully at his home with his family around him, after a brief illness due to heart problems.
One sister, Hester and husband, Henry Morrison, are bur. in Ashland Cemetery, Pittsburg Co. OK; the other, Laura Vance Sullivan, is in Springtown Cem., Parker Co. TX; his oldest bro., John Vance, bn 1854 MS, was in AR in 1880; unk where he and his family lived and died; his half bro, James Jefferson (J.J.) McNutt, is bur. in Gerty Cemetery, Hughes Co.OK.
