Accident Kills Lester Millican
Walterville- Lester Robert Millican, lifetime resident of the Walterville community and pioneer rancher and stockman of Lane County was killed here Wednesday. His horse apparently stumbled in soft ground and after falling on him dragged him a estimated 90 feet
Coroner Phil Barthelomew of Springfield reported the prominent 93-year old rancher was attempting to chase a bull from the pasture when the accident occurred. The coroner said tracks indicated the horse strode across wet ground and somersaulted, catching Millican's foot in the stirrup.
John Ralston of the same community, who had been working with Millican, returned in search of him. Millican died within a half hour after Ralston reached him and before he could be taken to a hospital.
The stockman was born at Walterville, July 19, 1882 and had lived there all his life. Survivors include his window. Mrs. Ada Millican, a son, Robert of Walterville, two daughters, Mrs. Lucille Millican Hale, Swisshome, and Mrs. Dorothy Millican Barnum, Walterville.
Also surviving are five sisters, Miss Belle Mill, Springfield; Mrs Agnes McClain, Mrs. Fannie Leveridge and Mrs Ina Garrison all of Eugene; Mrs Ada Bribaker (Brewbaker) of Vancouver, Wash; two brothers, Oscar and Lawrence Millican, both of Walterville, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held from the Bartholomew-Buell chapel at Springfield at 2 P.M. Saturday.
