The ancestors of Maria Hugus on both sides were Huguenots, who fled from France in the late 1700’s. Her mother, Elizabeth Ankeny Hugus was the daughter of Peter Ankeny, a celebrated Captain in the Revolutionary War. Her father Michael Hugus was a renowned clockmaker by trade, who was also engaged in farming and hotelkeeping.

Maria was the eldest of 12 children of Elizabeth and Michael Hugus (10 of whom survived to adulthood).

She grew up in Somerset County, Pennsylvania and at the age of 21, married James Connelly, also a native of Somerset County. James was the son of an Irish immigrant who made a name for himself as livestock dealer in in Somerset County.

In 1831, Maria and James and their two young daughters moved about 120 miles West to the very new village of Petersberg in Somerset County. Petersberg lay on the Great National Road which James was very active in promoting and building. In 1831, their first son Henry Clay was born, and seven more children followed.

In 1843, James died. Following his death, Maria returned to her home town of Somerset with her three minor children, and there she remained until her death in 1881. She was buried in the Ankeny family burial plot in Somerset.
