Her mother Maria Legg Brainard died in Marathon, Cortland County, NY, Jan. 31,1891, aged 67 years. Maria left one daughter, Josephine and five sons, one of the sons, Lieut. David L. Brainard of world wide fame in connection with the Greely Arctic expedition. Maria was the daughter of Bailey Legg who came to this country from Mendon, MA in 1825. Maria's brothers were Sylvanas B., David and Judson P. all of whom predeceased her. One of Maria's sisters, Mrs. Nathan Smally died some years before her. Her sisters, Mrs. Harriet Bly and Miss Abbie R. Legg survive.
