Helen Coles, 76, of Albion, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 1992, at Rest Haven Manor in Albion, where she had been a resident.

Funeral services are scheduled Monday at 10 a.m. at Ingram Funeral Home in Albion with burial in Graceland Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Rucker will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Albion or the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Coles was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Edwards County. She was the daughter of Ralph and Josephine (Johnson) Cowling. On July 27, 1939, she married Glenn Coles at the church parsonage in Albion.

A teacher for 38 years, Mrs. Coles had graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1936. She obtained a bachelor's degree there in 1952. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, and was named State Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1968. Mrs. Coles was also an active member of the First Christian Church in Albion, where she was an elder and a Sunday school teacher. She also served on the board and other committees and was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was active in the home Extension and the Red Cross bloodmobile.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn; two sons, David of Ellery and Dwight of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, Henry Cowling of Santa Maria, Calif.; one sister, Lucille Seigle of Browns; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters.
