Death of Peter Coon

Peter Coon, an old settler of Cass county, died at his home in Manley on Monday, of Bright's disease, aged 74 years.

The deceased was born in Columbia county, New York, and lived in the place of his birth until he was four years of age when his parents moved to Pennsylvania. He acquired a sound education in the common schools, and at the age of 22 left home ánd made his way to LaSalle county, Illinois, where he engaged in farming for twelve years. He served in the defense of his country as a member of Company C, 104th Illinois Infantry. He was in the Army of the Cumberland under General Sherman and was honorably discharged July 15, 1865.

In 1867 Mr. Coon concluded to invest the money he had made in farming in Illinois in Nebraska land, and came here with his family for that purpose. He lived for a year in Weeping Water, and in the meantime looked about for a suitable location and finally selected a tract of eighty acres of land now included in the old homestead. This homestead he afterwards sold and for some years past he has been a resident of Manley, where he owned a nice home and several peices of residence property.

Mr. Coon in early manhood, while still living in Pennsylvania, was married to Miss Phoebe A. Bennett, their marriage taking place in December, 1854. To them were born six children, Sarah Alice, Mary Rosella, George Edwin, Katie Belle, Henry Everton and Frederick Eugene. Sarah Alice is now Mrs. Aaron Jenkins, of Manley; Mary married Charles Bouton, and died eight or nine years ago; Katie lives at Broken Bow, George lives in Weeping Water, Fred lives in Manley and Everton lives on a farm near Lincoln.

Peter Coon was a man of sterling common cense and a good capacity for business. He was a kind husband, a loving father and obliging neighbor. He will be greaely missed in the community and county and his loved ones have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.

Funeral services are to be held at the family home this (Wednesday) afternoon and burial will be made in Oakwood cemetery.
