Mrs. Margaret Smedley, "Gone, But Not Forgotten.".

Born 5 March 1821 Died February 25, 1904.

Seven children, thirty-nine great-grandchildren and a host of more distant relatives and friends remain to grieve the loss of Grandma Smedley. Her maiden name was Margaret Boss, born in Washington county Indiana. In early life she united with the Christian Church and until her death lived in harmony with her profession. .

August 23, 1840, she was united in marriage to Wm. Smedley of Washington county Indiana. Nine children were born to them, eight boys, John P., Phillip, George, William F., Simeon, Peter, Morgan W., and David W., and one girl Mrs. Polly Ritter, all of which except Peter and George survive her. Her husband enlisted in the union army during the civil war and died in Andersonville prison June 30, 1864. She remained in her native county until 1879, when she moved to Kansas, locating two and a half miles south-east of Agra, with her son Phillip who homesteaded the farm on which he now resides. About 1888 she moved to Agra and located at the house which she occupied at the time of her death. .

Her brief illness was caused by a hard fall resulting is a sprain and other complications, which with her great age soon took her away..

The funeral was conducted at the Christian church Saturday morning, Feb. 27, by Rev. Williamson, after which the body was laid to rest in the Agra Cemetery. She will be much missed by those who knew her and the memory of her life will be a benediction. Those who serve friends or country through a long and useful life leave a monument that will not crumble, and an incentive to others to follow their example. Like Abel of old they being dead yet speak, and their works do follow them..
