Funeral for Mitchell Earl Boyiddle, 60, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Comanche Nation Funeral Home Chapel with brothers the Rev. Mike Boyiddle, the Rev. Kenric Boyiddle and Hicks Boyiddle officiating.
Mr. Boyiddle passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011, after a lengthy illness.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Mount Scott KCA Cemetery under direction of Comanche National Funeral Home.
He was born July 6,1950, in Oklahoma City, to Parker Boyiddle Sr. and Thamar Bernice May Boyiddle. He met, as he was fond of saying, the love of his life, Brenda Shelby, in Houston, Texas. They were married there on June 20, 1992.
His love of Native American art, which included drawing, painting sculpting and beadwork, began when he was a child. He attended high school at the Native American Art Institute, Santa Fe, N.M. There, he studied under Fritz Scholder and Allen Houser, who took him under his talented wings. They became lifelong friends. He graduated from OSU-Okmulgee with two degrees before starting his working career in construction, which he did for many years. His love of art, however, drew him back, and, for the past 20 years, he devoted his time to his artistic talents.
He was a well-known renowned artist. His artwork is on exhibit at the Kirkpatrick Museum, Oklahoma City, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Native. He garnered numerous awards for his craftsmanship, winning best of show at the Red Earth Powwow, Oklahoma City, for his beadwork presentation, best of show in both painting and beadwork at the American Indian Exposition, Anadarko, best of show for his beadwork and first place for his Native American war bonnet at the Eitel Jorg Museum, Indianapolis, Ind., numerous awards at the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Ariz., and at the Native American Art Show, Houston, Texas.
He and his wife traveled extensively to Native American craft shows and events showcasing his talent as an artist. Both he and Brenda worked together to create Native American jewelry. He always felt it was an honor to be a member of the Kiowa tribe. This was evident in every aspect of his life, especially his Native American artwork. He was a member of the Native American Church. He enjoyed singing peyote songs and was a man of faith and prayer. His prayers and words of encouragement will be greatly missed. He let friends and family know he cared and never failed to say, "I love you."
He is survived by his wife, Brenda, of the home; a daughter, Angela Boyiddle Hillman, Reno Nev.; a son, Eric Boyiddle, Reno, Nev.; a brother, Kenric Boyiddle, Yeager; an aunt, Wanda Vega, Lawton; a special brother and sister Boots Marsh and Jackie Partin-Marsh, Standing Rock Reservation, N.D.; a special brother, Brad Heath, Wilson; a brother-in-law, Joe Shelby, Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Lisa Shelby, Seattle; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: George Monroe Boyiddle and Parker Boyiddle Jr.; his maternal grandparents: George May and Nora Edwards May; and his paternal grandparents: Adali Boyiddle and Nettie Alice Boyiddle.
