Funeral service for William E. Hammon, 85, of Decatur will be Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jackie Kay officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cook Cemetery.

Mr. Hammon, who died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Hartselle Medical Center, was born July 9, 1925, in Morgan County to James Daniel Hammon and Lonie Bell Williams Hammon.

Mr. Hammon was a member of Central Park Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Hammon retired from NASA after 50 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Turney Hammon; one son, Bill Hammon (Jaye) of Decatur; two daughters, Sheila Hogue (Gil) of Cullman and Carole Lavender of Madison; five grandsons, Blane Hogue of Gulf Shores, Jeffrey Martin of Gadsden, Matthew Hogue of Cullman, Stoney Hammon of Priceville, and John Richey; one granddaughter, Heather Wilson; and nine great-grandchildren, Harrison Martin, Sara Hammon, Emma Martin, Anna Hammon, Stoney W. Hammon Jr., Lillie C. Hogue, Tyler Richey, Bailey Richey and Chelsea Richey.

Pallbearers will be nephews.
