Mrs. Shemper was a housewife, devout Christian, scholar, crusader against political injustice, and caring mother to more than just her own children.
She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Blackwell.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Shemper of Hattiesburg; two sons, Michael Hays and his wife Carolyn of Los Angeles, Calif. and Aaron Hays of Austin, Tex.; her mother, Winnie Blackwell of Hattiesburg; two brothers, Danny Blackwell of Jackson, Miss. and Phillip Blackwell of Hattiesburg; five step-sons; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday from 1 p.m. until service time at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
