Janet "Jan" Besnecker, 74, of Butler, formerly of Connoquenessing, died at 2 p.m. Sunday at her residence.
Born June 26, 1934, in Butler, she was the daughter of the late Francis "Pete" Shaffer and the late Luella Stevenson Shaffer.
Mrs. Besnecker was a member of Community Alliance Church.
She was a foster mother to 75 children, mostly newborns, volunteered in the crib nursery at Community Alliance Church for more than 25 years, was a former deaconess and former choir member of Community Alliance Church, attended the Alliance Women and also enjoyed Sunday school and Bible studies.
Mrs. Besnecker worked at the Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Butler Memorial Hospital Newborn Unit, Butler County CYS and the Children's Home of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Besnecker is survived by one son, Barry L. and his wife, Diane Besnecker of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Jill Stevenson of Butler and Rene and her husband, Thomas Good of Butler; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Bette Minto of Connoquenessing and MaryAnn and her husband, Sanders Talley, of Scottsboro, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Besnecker was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Besnecker, who passed away Dec. 10, 1992.
BESNECKER Friends of Janet "Jan" Besnecker, who died Sunday, April 5, 2009, will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. (During sidewalk replacement, please use the East Locust Street entrance into the funeral home parking lot. Thank you.)
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Community Alliance Church with the Rev. Dennis L. Krajacic of Community Alliance Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Road, Butler, PA 16001.
