"The LaFayette Sun" - March 26, 1884:

Death of Aged Citizen.

Mr. Jacob Rampy departed this life, at his home four miles north of Fredonia, the 20th inst., after a confinement to his bed for about four weeks; being over seventy six years old.
Mr. Rampy was among the pioneers of this county, having been born in South Carolina. While yet a young man he married and emigrated to Troup County, Ga. Remaining there but two years, he removed to Chambers county, Alabama, near the place upon which he died. It is said that he split and hewed the flooring of the first house built by, and in which he lived, when he first settled in this vicinity forty years ago; and being very poor, moved here in a little wagon drawn by a blind horse. Yet, by industry and economy, and attending to his own business and letting that of other alone, a point he invariably made in life, up to his death, notwithstanding the losses sustained by the war, he had unassisted from any source whatever, acquired a good property of landed estate and other effects.
"Uncle Jake," as he was familiarly known, was a consistent member of the Methodist Church at Union, at which place his remains were deposited on the 21st after, a funeral discourse by Rev. T. K. Tierce. And his attendance at church meetings was proverbial; his seat never unoccupied unless detained at home by some providential hindrance. During his sickness he freely expressed his perfect reconciliation to the will of God, and bore his affliction with profound Christian fortitude. Deceased leaves an affectionate but much afflicted companion, one aged sister, four daughters, besides many grand and some great grand children and a multitude of friends to mourn his loss as well as a void in the church and community not easily supplied. But why need we enlarge upon the virtues of one whose deeds themselves are so vivid in the memory of the entire circle of his acquaintance? "Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord."
