2000 Obituary:
Sherman B. Hinckley, 88, mining engineer, businessman and brother of President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Aug. 13, 2000, of complications from cancer at LDS Hospital.
He was born Oct. 20, 1911, in Salt Lake City. He spent his summers on a farm in the East Millcreek area of Salt Lake County, attended Salt Lake schools, LDS High School and was graduated in 1933 from the University of Utah with a degree in mining engineering.
He worked in the operation of mines and mills and other businesses in Montana, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, was president of Panaca Power & Light Co. and a member of the board of several firms, including Banner Mining Co. and Saltair Railroad. The railroad was an operation of Hogle Investment Co. Mr. Hinckley operated many Hogle Investment entities.
Mr. Hinckley was instrumental, along with a cousin, the late Arza Hinckley, in developing Historic Cove Fort into a popular attraction in Millard County. The fort was built by Ira Nathaniel Hinckley, a grandfather of Sherman Hinckley, and was a stopover for Mormon pioneers and other travelers. The fort is now a well-known visitor attraction in Millard County.
Sherman Hinckley and his wife, Eileen [Ellis], served a full-time mission to the Historic Cove Fort Visitors Center. He was the director of the center and used his expertise in engineering and business to further develop the site.
Funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 Wasatch Drive (2520 East). Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
