2nd Mayor of Paducah, Kentucky (1863-1867) (1875-1877)

_______________

A LONG LIFE

Of Usefulness Ended in the Death
of Mr. J. G. Fisher

DIED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON

Had Served Three Terms as Mayor,
and Watched the Rapid
Growth of Paducah.

80 Years Old -- Funeral Tomorrow.

Mr. John G. Fisher, ex-mayor and one of Paducah's oldest and most venerated citizens, died at 4:20 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his residence on South Fourth street, of general debility and the effects of a fall recently sustained.

Mr. Fisher had just turned eighty, and on his last birthday had a family reunion, to which all his children and grandchildren were invited. Despite his years he was active and his mind was undimmed by the ravages of age. About ten days ago while walking about in the yard he received a fall which produced an illness that developed into fever.

For several days he lingered between life and death and on account of his age it was thought that death would result. While a shock to his family and relatives his demise was no surprise and he was surrounded by loving friends and relatives.

Mr. Fisher was one of Paducah's best and most public spirited citizens. He had watched Paducah grow and expand from a mere villa to a thriving progressive city. He had not only watched this development but he had ably assisted in it while many of our citizens were little children.

Mr Fisher was a man of wide experince and his memory reached back over s wide range of years. Like many another of our good citizens he came to America a poor boy, and by dint of integrity and toil worked his way up to a position second to none in the estimation of his fellow-men

The deceased had been in America for 62 years and in Paducah for 58 years.

He was born in Lougenbrandt, Wurtemburg, Germany, in Oct. 1816; came to America in 1834, first located in Philadelphia, Penn., there completing his trade, that of baker, for which he served his apprenticeship in the old country. In 1838 he removed to Paducah, which has since been his home. For several years he engaged in the bakery business, but in 1857 established a brewery, first at First and Jefferson, later at Seventh and Broadway and lastly Bellevue Brewery.

Mr. Fisher was a gentleman of great discriminating powers, a public spirited man and one who did perhaps as much towards advancing the interests of the city as any other man. His great ability as an administrative officer was early demonstrated in his management of public affairs and he was one of the first board of trustees the city ever had. For four years he was in the city council and In 1863 was elected mayor serving two consecutive terms.

In 1874 he entered into his third term, which he served with credit to himself and honor to the city. He was subsequently collector of taxes and a member of the school board for several terms. He was married on April 9th 1842 to Miss Mary F. Grief of the county who survives him at the age of seventy six. Several years ago Mr. Fisher retired from business to enjoy the rest his long and useful life entitles him to.

He leaves five children: Mr. J. Wm. Eisher, circuit clerk of McCracken county; Mr. Frank Fisher president aud manager of the Daily Sun; City Assessor John G. Fisher Sr., Mrs. W. F. Paxton and Miss Lulu Fisher , all of the city. In addition he leaves two grandchildren, Mrs. A. R. Grouse and Mr. Otho Fisher, and a niece Mrs. George Oehlschlaeger, Sr. One of his children who is dead, Mr. G. A. Fisher, was at one tlme city marshal.

The deceased was an old and honored Mason, and a faithful member of the Lutheran church. The funeral will take place from the family residence tomorrow evening; services at 2 o'clock by Rev. J. C. Tully and under the ausplces of the Masonic fraternity.

The pall-bearers will be: J. R. Smith, J. H. Johnson. T. E. Moss, Fred Ramleiter, M. Bloom, Charles Reed, F. Hummel, Sr., and O. Jack Lawson.

Mayor Yeiser has called the city council to meet at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon and attend the funeral in a body, accompainied by the police force.
