Death Certificate
Life History of Elizabeth Rebecca Rawson. By Jennifer Larsen Broschinsky. Elizabeth Rebecca Rawson Garlick was born September 2, 1873 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, a daughter of William Coffin Rawson and Eliza Jane Cheney Rawson. Both of her parents were pioneers of pioneer parents and suffered a lot of the early hardships of the Saints. Her father, William Coffin Rawson, was born 13 January 1832 at Randolph County, Indiana, the son of Horace Strong Rawson and Elizabeth Coffin Rawson. Her mother, Eliza Jane Cheney, was born August 29, 1837 in Kirtland, Ohio, the daughter of Nathan Cheney and Eliza Jane Beebe. Elizabeth’s great grandparents received their Temple Endowments in the Nauvoo Temple. In April of 1896 Elizabeth and her mother attended the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple. It was a glorious and wonderful experience, one which she never forgot.

On January 1, 1896 Elizabeth was married to Joseph Elsbury Garlick of Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple by President John R Winder. There were fifty couples married that day, there at the temple. In Salt Lake City they enjoyed the celebration of Statehood day – Utah being changed from a territory to a State. It was a wonderful occasion and in her own words, they saw more people there than they had ever seen gathered together at one time. They started for Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah, to make their home. They lived there at Fairview for several years and were saddened because they were never blessed with children, but they finally had a chance to raise a brother and sister, the boy, Chester Owen and the girl, Sylvia Owen. Chester was four years of age when they took him to raise and the girl Sylvia, was only a few months old. Sylvia was very frail and died before she was a year old. About 1909 Joseph moved, with his wife, and Chester, the boy, out to Farr West and bought Elizabeth’s old home and farm. Both Joseph and Elizabeth were active in many organizations of the Church, in the Ward where they lived. Elizabeth’s big interest was in Genealogy and she worked hard and diligently for many years on the Rawson line. Elizabeth was very proud of her heritage. She and Joseph gave Chester a good home and taught him the principles of the Gospel. When Chester was twenty years old Joseph and Elizabeth sent and kept him on a Mission for the Church to Old Mexico for three years. Joseph Elsbury died of Cancer on October 25, 1951. After his death Elizabeth’s health was never good. She died ten years later, on June 18, 1961.
