DAVENPORT - Funeral services for Charles W. Hughes, 79, of Davenport, will be noon Thursday at the New Life Church of God and Christ, 2202 West Fourth, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until noon at the church. Mr. Hughes died Friday, November 11, 2005, at home. Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.

Charles was born May 30, 1926, in Louisville, Miss., the son of Joe Nathan and Rosie (Crosby) Hughes. He married Ethel Louise Patty in Louisville, Miss. He later married Annie Lee Cooper in Louisville, Miss. Charles moved to Davenport in 1970 with his wife, Annie, and their children, in an effort to make a better life for his family. He then became a self-employed scrapper, welder and farmer. His hobbies included hunting and fishing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed sitting and telling jokes with his family. He loved attending church until his illness. He was always there to lend a helping hand to a friend in need. He was a loving father, husband and grandfather. Charles was a great man and he will be deeply missed by everyone he touched during his life.

He leaves to mourn but live on: daughters, Elizabeth Sykes and Faye Hughes, both of Davenport, Diane Cooper, of Rock Island, and Mary Hughes, of Toledo, Ohio; sons, Robert Charles, Izell, Willie James, and Willie Hughes Jr., all of Davenport, Willis Cooper, of Davenport, and Hubbert Lee, Ray Charles, Kenny Ray, and Jimmie Hughes, all of Louisville, Miss.; four granddaughters that he raised from birth, Melissa, Elizabeth, LeAnne and Angela Hughes, all of Davenport; sister, Grosie Alley Bell; brothers, J.W. and Hodger; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lee Hughes, daughters, Annie Ruth Hughes and JoAnne Hughes, son, Elvis Charles Hughes, grandsons, Robert Jr. and Damion Hughes, parents, four brothers, three sisters, and a special friend, Gloria Defenbaugh.
