Daughter of Elizabeth Hilton and Jarvis Willgoose of Wigan, Lancashire, England. Her birth record spells her surname as "Willgoose".

Mary was the first wife of John Lowe (1818-1891). They were married 17 November 1839 at Haigh Church, Wigan, Lancashire, England as they were members of the Church of England.

On 28 April 1850 they were baptized into the LDS Church and made plans to join other Saints immigrating to America.

Sailing from Liverpool Harbor on 14 February 1853, they crossed the Atlantic Ocean aboard the "Elvira Owen". They left behind, buried at Liverpool, two children: Jarvis, born 1 July 1844 - died 3 January 1845; and Elizabeth, born 7 May 1848 - died 11 May 1848.

Sailing with their parents were: Richard, born 23 August 1840; William, born 1 January 1842; Peter, born 9 March 1846; John born 23 March 1852 and a second daughter they named Elizabeth, born 14 August 1849.

They arrived at the Port of New Orleans 31 March 1853 and set out within three months for the Great Salt Lake Valley, arriving during the October Conference of the Church in 1853.

First settling at Centerville, Davis, Utah, the following children were born: Mary Ellen, February 1855; Alice Ann, 16 January 1857 and Sarah Jane 7 January 1859. they moved to Box Elder County in March of 1860, settling at Willow Creek, which later became Willard, Utah.

After the death of Mary Willgoose, John married a widow by the name of Mary Miller, her maiden name was probably Fox.
