Ray Hendricks, age 83, of Osakis, Minnesota, passed away Saturday, September 4, 1999 at the Osakis Community Memorial Home.
Raymond Martin Hendricks was born on February 3, 1916 in Belle River Township, Douglas County, Minnesota to William and Ida (Grundei) Hendricks. He grew up on the family farm and attended country schools through the eighth grade. When World War II broke out Ray was called to serve and enlisted on May 28, 1942. He served in the U.S.Army as a Technician 4th grade with the 382nd Field Artillery Battalion. He was a tank driver who fought in the Battles of Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes amd Central Europe. He received the Purple Heart Medal for bravery in action in addition to the Europe and African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, four Overseas Service Bars and a Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge on October 3, 1945, Ray returned to Minnesota and farming. He was married on November 15, 1945 to Leona Ferrian and raised his family on a farm he bought in Leslie Township, Todd County. He married Florence Ralph in 1969. In 1975, after almost 30 years of farming, he sold his farm and moved into Nelson where he lived until poor health required a move to the Community Memorial Home in Osakis in 1999.
Ray was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis, having belonged to the St. Nicholas Parish in Belle River prior to that. He was also a member of the Osakis VFW Post #7902. Ray enjoyed farming and being out doors, especially while working the fields in his John Deere tractors. He raised many type of apple trees and after his retirement he enjoyed socializing and playing cards with his friends at the Corral or Diamond Jim's in Nelson.
Ray is survived by his children: Frances and Larry Sopyck of Minneapolis, John (Jack and Eline Hendricks of Great Falls, Mt., Ray (Butch) and Connie Hendricks of Webster, Allan and Susan Hendricks of Nelson; five grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; brothers, Marvin and Lois Hendricks and Lloyd and Darlene Hendricks , all of Osakis; sisters Gladys Fearing of Osakis, Evelyn Miller of Washington, Lorraine and Robert Schlosser of Carlos; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son; and and infant grandson, Brian Sopcyk.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Osakis with Father Victor Kinzer officiating. Music was provided by the Adult Church Chior and the gigt bearers were his granddaughters, Katie Sopcyk and Tonya Hendricks. Interment was at the Calvary Cemetery in Osakis. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Osakis VFW Honor Guard. Active pallbeareres were Norman, Donald and Kenneth Schlosser, Guy Hendricks, Jim Fearing and Christopher Sopcyk. Arrangement were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home, Osakis.
