I'm still researching Zachariah Hupp. He was my Great Great Grandfather.
Revised November 18, 2018.

BIRTH
Zachariah was born October 22, 1837 in Washington County, Ohio, and lived most of his life there. His father was Hiram Hupp, who along with his brother Henry and father Francis were early settlers (mostly around Duck Creek). (The part of Washington County where Zachariah was born & raised became part of Noble County when it was formed in 1851, so some sources give his birth as being in Noble County, Ohio).

MARRIAGE
On August 26, 1858, Zachariah married Maria/Mariah J Rhodes in Noble County Ohio at the home of her parents, Joseph & Maria Rhodes. The ceremony was performed by Rev John S.Corp. Early in their marriage, Zachariah and Maria lived with Maria's parents in Aurelia (in Washington County), and Zachariah worked as a farm hand.

MILITARY SERVICE / CIVIL WAR
On November 7, 1861 (in Marietta Ohio) 25 year old Zachariah enlisted into Company H of the 1st Regiment Light Artillery, a division of the Ohio Volunteers. He enlisted as a Private under the Command of Captain James F. Huntington, with the enlistment being for a term of 3 years. However, he was taken prisoner on June 9, 1862 at Port Republic and was discharged at Alexandria Virginia on 23 March 1863 due to disability (1890 Veterans schedule specifies heart disease).

CHILDREN
According to available records, Zachariah and Maria had 11 children:
1-Victoria Hupp (June 4, 1860 - December 25, 1937) (Victoria & her husband Henry Baker are my Great Grandparents)
2-Winfield Scott Hupp (1861-1938)
3-Susanne "Susie" Hupp (1863- )
4-Mary Ann "Madie" Hupp (1865- 1959)
5-Rhoda Hupp (1867-1954)
6-Martin Van Buren Hupp (1869-1941)
7-Joseph Hupp (1870 or 1871-1900)
8-Zachariah Hupp Jr "Jackie" (1873-1954)
9-Amy Caroline "Callie" Hupp (1875-1942)
10-Anna Mae Hupp (1877-1949)
11-John Mason Hupp (1880- 1975)

DEATH
Zachariah hanged himself over a bank of Duck Creek on the afternoon of November 12, 1915 according to the local newspapers, which both reported he had been depressed over failing health. He had applied for a pension through the military in March 1915.

The following article appeared in the Marietta Journal on November 13:

SUICIDED BY HANGING DID AGED MAN OF SALEM TWP. ILL HEALTH PROMPTED ZACHARIAH HUPP TO END OWN LIFE
Zachariah Hupp, aged 78 years, well known retired farmer living on Duck Creek, between Warner and Salem, committed suicide Friday afternoon by hanging. He had been in ill health for some time and his condition brought on despondency.
Members of the family had been carefully guarding the aged man, and soon after he left the house, Friday, they went in search of him. Down by the creek they found his lifeless body hanging from the limb of a tree. The tree branched out over a bank, and after placing a rope about his neck, he had dropped out over the bank so that his feet cleared the ground.
Soon after the body was cut down, Coroner Green was notified and he went to the scene, Friday afternoon and conducted a brief inquest, holding that the death was self inflicted.
Mr. Hupp is survived by his wife, Maria Hupp, three sons, Winfield and Martin Hipp, of Lower Salem, and John Hupp of Elba, and six daughters, Rhoda of Leroy, Ill. Carrie, of Oblong Ill., Annie, of Cambridge, O. Victoria of Flag, O. Susie of Washington, Pa, and May of Zanesville. He was a native of Noble County.
Funeral arrangements have not been made pending the arrival of the children, but burial will be made at Mt. Ephriam.
