Joel H Herb a well-known citizen of Logan township is numbered among the self-made men in Sugar Valley, his accumulations being the result of his own industry obtained by self-denial & economy & the exercise of naturally good judgement in regard to agricultural pursuits & business matters. He was born ear Reading & is a grandson of John Herb a native of Germany who on coming to this county located in Berks County.
Abram Herb the father of our subject was also born in Berks County where he engaged in farming. His death occurred in1872. Abram was a Democrat. He married Catherine Bachtel who also was a native of Berks County. They had 13 children Rachel, Hattie, Isaac, Mary, John H, Catherine, Jacob, Abram, Hannah, David, Harriet, Daniel & John.
The subject of this sketch had only a limited education in the German language working on a farm until 14 years of age when he left the family home to make his own way in the world. He spent 2 years in Schuylkill County then in Dauphin County working at the miller's trade with Henry Renninger. In 1841 he came to Clinton County locating in Sugar Valley where he rented the Kleckner Mill at Loganton. In 1859 he bought the Jacob miller farm of 97 acres which he cleared & improved.
In Logan township he married Miss Mary Brungart a native of Sugar Valley. They had 5 children: Harriet wife of William O Groninger of Jasper County Missouri, Joseph, Jefferson B, Calista who married Harvey Wise & John.
Mrs. Herb was called to her final rest on 1/21/1891. She was an earnest Christian & a faithful member of the Reformed Church.
Mr. Herb was a Democrat. When coming to Sugar Valley he had only 25 cents. Due to his hard work, perseverance, strict economy he has accumulated a comfortable competence.
