Gibbs, Harmon T. Family

Harmon T. Gibbs, son of John Denton and Annie Watson Gibbs, was born in Trintiy April 9, 1891. He attended the Trinity schools, and all his adultlife he worked at the capenter's trade which he learnedfrom his father.
In 1912 he was married to Vestie Elizabeth Harper of Kittrell, daughter of JohnReynolds and Cordilia Myers Harper. They built a small home at the northern boundary of his parents' property, adjoining the Cloy-Sturgis homestead.
Harmon died in 1921 at age 30, a victim of black jaundice, and is buried in Cedar Grove cemetery. After his death Vestie had a home built just south of the J. D. Gibbs homestead. This home was later purchased by Luther and Ola Cloys Bell, and is currently owned by Randall Burke and family.
Vestie and children moved to Teague, TX, in 1926. In 1930 she was remarried to John Foster. He died in 1953 and she in 1979. Both are buried in Greenwood cemetery at Teague. They had no children.
Harmon and Vestie are survived by four children, three of whom currently live in Teague:
1. Vivian Barbara was born in Kittrell June 19, 1914. She is married to J. Wiley Whitley, and they have two children: Linda Joyo and John Harmon Whitely. Vivian was a teacher.
2. John Denton was born in Trintiy October 8, 1915. He worked as a printer and linotype operator until his retirement. J. D. is single.
3. Harmon Ray was born in Trintiy November 16, 1917. Ray is a retired teacher and lives in Montana. He is married to Robbie McClintock Gibbs and they have two children, Gary Paul and Rebecca Lynn.
4. Irby Allen was born in Trinity January 20, 1920. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and stayed in the Navy for thrity years. He is married to Romilou O'Neal Gibbs, and they have three children: Harmon Allen, Rosalie Elizabeth and David Denton.
All three of the Gibbs' sons served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
