MARTIN ANTOINE RYERSON, son of Martin and Mary A. (Campau) Ryerson, was b. on the old Antoine Campau homestead, Grand Rapids, Mich., Oct.26, 1856. He later acquired this property and presented it to the city of his nativity to be used as a park and to be thereafter known as "Antoine Campau Park" in memory of his maternal grandfather. In addition to this gift Mr. Ryerson gave the city the "Ryerson Public Library Building." In 1857 his parents took up their residence in Chicago when he received his first education in the public schools. After seven years of study in Europe he entered the Harvard Law School and graduated in 1878. Returning to Chicago he practiced law for a time then became identified with his father as a member of the firm. He is one of the Trustees of the Field Museum, of Chicago, and Vice President of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Mr. Ryerson continued in the business established by his father, from 1881 to 1892. Since then he has devoted his attention to travel and various benevolent and educational organizations, notably the University of Chicago, for which he erected the Ryerson Physical Laboratory, in memory of his father. He is President of the Board of Trustees of the University. In 1881 Mr. Ryerson married Caroline Hutchinson, dau. of Charles Hutchinson, of Chicago. They have no children.
