Mary Elizabeth, daughter of James and Miranda Pullen was born April 11, 1840 and was married to Harvey Applegate December 8, 1859.

To this union were born three children. Marion James having died while in early years.

In 1865 her husband was wounded on the battlefield of Pittsburg, Va. and died there. After a lonely and hard struggle to care for her little ones, she married Sylvester Glidewell.

To this union were born eight children. Ida died in infancy and brother Edward lived to the age of manhood and died ten years ago. Now she leaves four daughters; Miranda, Carrie, Anna, and Ivy and three sons Will, Milton and Elmer, a husband, two brothers and twenty-eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. But we must say, "Thy will be done, Dear Father, Resign us to the same."

She took to her bed April 9th with a serious lung affliction, and abscess formed and the doctors informed her the only chance was an operation and that was not at all sure. But it was a chance and at her own request, we suffered it to take place Saturday May 6th and she lived only till four o'clock.

Her age was 71 years and 25 days. Her days were full of usefulness. She was never known to be a burden to anyone and we felt the she was still young.

She joined the church in '61. While we cannot say she helped to keep up the church and Sunday School we feel no less sure of her reward.

Let us turn pages of her history and read where she cared for the orphans and all in need and distress that came in reach of her.

Then read in His Holy word the promise "in as much as ye did it unto one of the least of these ye did it unto me."

She kept four of her sisters children till they could get homes or take care of themselves, and many others shared her motherly love.

In her last hours she told her children "She loved Jesus and had always tried to do his will and was trying to be willing to go. But to leave her husband and baby daughter was her only regret. Ivy, her baby, lives in Stoy, Ill. and could not be here on account. Mother told us where she wanted to be laid to rest and who to preach the funeral. But could not get a definite plan made for her from her bereft husband. But God will temper the wind to be shorn lamb and there will be a way, but not her own.

Funeral service at Hazel Dell at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon by Rev. Andrew McCash after which she was laid to rest by the side of her son in the Hazel Dell Cemetery. We mourn not as those who have no hope, although our home is shattered, we know she can rest is peace.
