Vice Admiral Thomas R Cooley, former deputy commander of the Western sea Frontier with headquarters at Treasure Island, died yesterday of a heart attack in Quantico, VA. Death came to the 66 year old naval war hero while he was visiting his daughter Mrs. H S Aitken, wife of a Marine Corps Major at the Quantico Naval Base.
BORN IN GRASS VALLEY
Another daughter, Mrs. Burnett Gadeberg, lives in Menlo Park. His wife died in November 1958. Admiral Cooley, who retired from his Treasure Island post in 1952, was born in Grass Valley, where he attended high school before his appointment to the Naval Academy. He was graduated in 1917. He served with distinction during World War I as an officer aboard the battleship Florida, one of four American battleships that formed the 6th Battleship Battalion of the British Grand Fleet.
WORLD WAR II RECORD
He also had a distinguishing World War II record servicing as commander of the battleship division that made up part of the first major American service force to enter the South China Sea and destroy enemy shipping. Subsequently ships under his command took part in the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and in the bombardment of the Japanese homeland near the end of the war.
