Penelope Dudley-Ward and her sister, Angela, were the daughters of William Dudley-Ward, the Liberal Member of Parliament for Southampton, and his wife, Winifred (nee Birkin). Freda, as she was known, was the lover of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII, later still the Duke of Windsor) and this may be why the couple divorced. Penelope appeared in a few films of the 1930s and 1940s, notably as Sarah Undershaft in Bernard Shaw's "Major Barbara", in "The Demi-Paradise" with Laurence Olivier, and "In Which We Serve" with Sir Noel Coward. In 1948, however, she retired from the screen to marry Sir Carol Reed (q.v.). She is buried next to him, although their graves are extremely difficult to locate, as they are obscured by a large bush, under which I had to crawl to take these photographs. On top of each tombstone are carved two daisies, because the house of Sir Carol's mother was called "Daisyfield."
