Pvt. Stephen Colwell was a soldier in the Revolutionary War (Revolutionary War Pension Record #W22808, National Archives). In 1775, he initially served in Captain Samuel Mays' Company, Colonel Chad Brown's Regiment, Colony Troops, for three months. After discharge he immediately served as substitute for Benjamin Paine in Capt. Timothy Wilmarth's independent Company of light infantry. In October 1777 he was drafted into said Company under General Spencer. In 1778 he was drafted into Capt. Abraham Winsor's Company, Colonel Chad Brown's regiment, RI Militia, and joined the army under General Sullivan.

Pvt. Stephen Colwell(5) was a son of Joseph Colwell(4) and Amey Winsor. [Note: after death of her first husband Joseph Colwell, Amey (Winsor) Colwell married(2) Charles Field.]

Joseph Colwell(4) was son of Robert Colwell III(3) and Martha Winsor. [Note: Joseph Colwell's wife, Amy Winsor, was daughter of Joseph Winsor and Deborah Mathewson.]

Robert Colwell III(3) was son of Robert Colwell, Jr.(2), who was the son of Robert Colwell, Sr.(1), the COLWELL Family immigrant progenitor.

[Note: Martha Winsor and Joseph Winsor noted above were siblings, and both children of Rev. Samuel Winsor, II/Jr. and wife Mercy Harding].

Thus, Pvt. Stephen Colwell was Great-grandson of Samuel Winsor, II/Jr. (and 3G-grandson of Rev. Roger Williams, via Roger Williams' daughter Mercy Williams).
