The immigrant family consisting of Wenzel & Anna, who were in their late 30s, and three children, Katherine, Anne & Anton, ages seven and under,when they first stepped foot on American soil on March 20, 1881.. They had sailed on the steam passenger cargo ship the SS Leipzig leaving Bremen, Germany with 1280 passengers on board arriving in Baltimore. Their destination was New Ulm, MN Eventually they moved to a tree claim 5 miles southwest of Redfield.Wenzel recorded 160 acres on July 11, 1889 and another 160 acres on Nov 24, 1890.
Here the family lived in a sodhouse along the banks of Turtle creek in Exline township, Spink co, SD. until they built a frame house. They had 5 more children, the youngest son dying as an infant, making a total of 8 children. Wenzel never learned English and died in 1902 The family moved to Canada soon after. Some of the family remained in Canada and some returned to the states, to raise their individual families there.
