Danny Benefiel Is Victim; Second Passenger Rescued

What promised to be a joyful day of sailing on Beaver Dam Lake turned into tragedy for an Elwood resident Sunday morning. Danny Benefiel, 23, 843 North 11th street, was drowned when the sail boat in which he and Leroy Bradburn, 25, 2509 So. Street, were riding turned over and capsized about 11:50 a. m. Sunday in the deep waters of the lake.

Bradburn was rescued by spectators at the scene, but an effort to reach Benefiel was turned back by the rough and cold waters and the overturned boat.

Benefiel 's body was reported to have disappeared before would-be rescuers could reach the stranded boatman. Kosciusko county sheriff's deputies said that Benefiel knew how to swim and Bradburn didn't.

It was theorized that the cold, rough waters of the lake pulled Benefiel's body beneath the surface before rescuers could reach him. An immediate search of the are was started, but it was 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening before the body was recovered in 50-feet of water by the Indiana State Police. State officers, along with conservation officers, the sheriff's department and volunteer workers worked throughout the day and into the evening hours before the body was found. Nine boats were employed during the search.

Benefiel's body was removed to a funeral home at Silver Lake after recovery and to Elwood for burial by the Jackley Funeral Home.

Born Oct. 26, 1936 in Elwood Mr. Benefiel was the son of albert and Eva Benefiel. He was employed at Heinz Manufacturing company and was to have been married soon to Miss Dee Taylor of Frankton.

Mr. Benefiel was a member of the U.S. Marines from 1953 to 1955.

Survivors include his parents, two brothers, William of Elwood and Jimmy at home; two sisters, Mrs. Kent Butler, Route 1, Elwood and Judy at home; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Laura Rominger of Elwood, and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Benefiel of Frankton.

The body is at the Jackley Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 o'clock this evening until afternoon Tuesday. At that time it will be taken to the family home where friends may call.

Funeral rites will be Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Zion Chapel Rev. John O'Bryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery.
