Elsie Cauble was born March 3, 1903 in Elco, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Lucy Wareing Cauble. She was the oldest of five children born to Ben and Lucy. She had a sister named Cleta and three brothers, Norman, Harry and Alfred. After her father's death her mother remarried and she had a half-sister named Ruth. Elsie grew up on the Cauble farm west of Elco on the Delta Road. Her desire was to go to Southern Illinois Normal School and be certified as a teacher, but being the oldest child of a widowed mother there was little money for her. She did teach one year at the Cauble School in northwest Alexander County. She would ride her horse from the home place across the hill behind her uncle and aunt's place, Fred and Flora Sims Cauble, to get to the Cauble School. Elsie was first married to Otto Breunig and they had two daughters, Mary and Catherine. She later married Oliver Hurston. They divorced and she married Claude Dillow. Elsie celebrated her 100th birthday on March 3, 2003 with family and died five and a half months later at the Glenview Terrace Nursing Home in Glenview, IL. Besides teaching school, Elsie had been a seamstress. She was a long time member of the Elco Methodist Church. She was survived by one daughter, Catherine Schmidtke of Des Plaines, IL; a half-sister, Ruth Basilio; four grandchildren, Karleen Vivirito, Guy Paukert, Keith Zimmer and Roxanna. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Paukert; a sister, Cleta Moore, and three brothers, Norman, Harry and Alfred Cauble. Funeral services were Monday, September 1, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Elco Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Greif officiating. Interment was in the St. John's Cemetery near Dongola. Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro was in charge of arrangements.
