Jeweler Is Victim Of Cass
Herbert Karl Bernthal
A community still shocked by the news of his sudden death paid last tribute Sunday to Herbert C. Bernthal who was a victim of drowning in the Cass River Thursday. Mr Bernthal's body was recovered from the river in back of his home several hours after he was last seen by his wife. Indications are that he may have Suffered a heart attack and fallen into the river while walking along its bank. His face was flushed, his hands clasped to his chest, his mouth and eyes were closed and his glasses were still in place, all leading to the belief that death struck before his body fell into the water. (Mrs Bernthal last saw her husband just after noon Thursday. She believed he was in his jewelry store until persistent ringing of the telephone caused her to look into the store which connects with their living quarters. She discovered his absence and immediately a casual search began
which grew more serious as the hours passed. Shortly after 4 pm, Police Chief Nick Resinor and sheriffs deputies began dragging the river. They were joined by Htlbert Geyer and Clinton Grainger and the body was found in about 12 feet of water around 5 pm.
Mr Bernthal was born in Frankenmuth Dec. 8, 1892, and had spent his entire life here. He had been in the jewelry business 40 years. He was a member or St. Lorenz Church and the Lutheran Fraternities of America.
On Nov. 30, 1916, in Frankenmuth, he married Miss Laura Heine whom he leaves with two sons and two daughters:' Norbert Bernthal, Dr. Donald Bernthal of Bad Axe, Mrs Paul Christman of Ann Arbor, Mrs Clayton Dey of Saginaw; nine grandchildren. He also leaves three brothers and four sisters, Dr. Adolph Bernthal of Richville; Oswald, Frankenmuth; Eugene, Birch Run; Mrs Alfred Schumaker, and Mrs Ralph Stroebel, both of Saginaw; the Misses Hulda and Lillian Bernthal.
Funeral services were conducted at the Nuechterlein-Wendt Funeral Chapel and at St. Lorenz Church with burial in St. Lorenz cemetery.
