Genie, youngest child of Jackson and Sophronia Hicks, was born at Potsdam, New York, Oct. 21, 1851, and at that place was educated in the public schools and also received a fine musical education. On Dec. 25, 1871, she was united in marriage to George W. Davis of Sparta, Ohio, a soldier of the Civil war and soon after came to his home to be a real true mother to his four motherless children (the baby girl having been adopted by an aunt). These children are all living at this time, Tommy and Charlie, of Elkins, W. Va.; Howard of Kenosha, Wis.,; and Bert of Frinta, Colo.; and Mrs. Alice McCurdy of Ottawa, Kansas.
Her very own three children, Mrs. Edith Corwin, of Lawton, Okla.; Mr. Hicks Davis of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Mitchell of this place. All three were in attendance at the last services. The deceased was of a genial disposition, a loving wife, and an affectionate mother and grandmother, a kind neighbor, willing and anxious to help others so long as her health would permit.
She has been in frail health since having the "flu" several months ago and on Dec. 7, of this year, suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, the effect being scarcely noticeable except in conversation, and on Thursday evening, Dec. 18, a severe repetition of the disease and the right side entirely paralyzed, after which time she could not speak and was unconscious until the end which came Sunday evening, Dec. 21, when she passed into that sleep which knows no awakening, aged 73 years and 2 months. Mr. Davis died in April, 1888. Besides the children mentioned above she is survived by ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Weltha Brown of Wichita, Kans., and other relatives and many friends who mourn their loss.
She has been a member of the M.E. church for over 40 years. A brief history from the cradle to the grave and as every wife and mother had her care and responsibilities, but met them all with undaunted courage.
A brief service was held at the late home, and the funeral services at the M.E. church, conducted by the Rev. R. Anna Swetland, a friend of the deceased for more than 50 years. Rev. W.D. Akers, her pastor, was ill and unable to assist. She was laid to rest in beautiful Bloomfield cemetery, 'neath a wealth of fragrant flowers.
