Manchester - G. Sylvester Hawkins, 75, a longtime resident of Manchester died yesterday at his home on Cass Terrace following a long illness. Born in Shaftsbury on April 5, 1909, he was the son of Hugh and Emma (Belden) Hawkins. He came to Manchester at age 6, and received his early education in local schools. He attended Rutland Business school. He married Ruth Elwell March 30, 1929 in Manchester. Mr. Hawkins was employed for many years at Mack Molding in Arlington and later as a sles clerk at Purdy's Shoe Store in Manchester. He retired in 1920. He was a member of the First Baptist church in Manchester for 57 years. His interests included his home and family and he was fond of gardening. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife of Manchester, his son JOhn B. Hawkins of Manchester, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the first Baptist church in Manchester with the Rev. Richard D. Olmstead, pastor, conducting teh services. Burial will follow in factory point cemetery in Manchester. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions maybe made to the memorial fund for the First Baptist church or the Manchester Rescue Squad through the Brewster Funeral Services Box 885 Manchester Cemetery 05255.
