Leo Gillig, 79, Decatur, father of the Rev. John E. Gillig, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, died at 3:30 p.m. in his residence. Mr. Gillig was Adams County Sheriff from 1939 to 1943, and the former owner of Decatur Drycleaners. He was a veteran of World War 1.
Also surviving are his wife, Florence L., five other sons, David, Fort Wayne, the Rev. Gerald, South Bend, former pastor at St. Henry’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Donald J., Commerce, Tex., a former pastor at Queen of Angels Church, and Albert and Anthony, Decatur; two daughters, Mrs. Rosemary Shelly, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Marcella Smith, Bluffton; two brothers, Robert, Fostoria, Ohio, and Herman, Decatur; and two sisters, Mrs. Cecelia Sheeter, Fostoria, and Mrs. Agnes Klosterman, Celina, Ohio.
The body was taken to Gillig-Doan-Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur.

Former sheriff Leo Gillig dies
Leo T. Gillig, 79, 612 N. Second St., a former Adams County Sheriff, died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital, one hour after being suddenly stricken at his residence. Although having suffered a previous heart attack a year ago, his death was unexpected.
He was born in Adams County Jan. 25, 1895, the son of Conrad and Mary Appelman Gillig, and was married to Florence L. Kohne May 25, 1926, who survives.
Active in Democratic circles, he served as deputy eight years under former sheriffs, Dallas Brown and Ed P. Miller, then was elected to a four-year term as sheriff in 1943. He was later associated with J. F. Sanmann Realty Co., was a former employee of General Electric and from 1948 to 1968 operated the Decatur Dry Cleaners with his son, Albert.
He was a veteran of W.W. I, serving in the U.S. Medical Corps, and was an active member of Adams Post 43 American Legion.
Mr. Gillig was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, and was a past grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus.
Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, Albert of Decatur, Rev. John E. Gillig, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Ft. Wayne, David of Ft. Wayne, Rev. Donald J. Gillig of Commerce, Texas, Anthony of Decatur, and Rev. Gerald Gillig of St. Matthews Church, South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. John (Rosemary) Shelley of Indianapolis and Mrs. Ronald J. (Marcella) Smith of Bluffton; two brothers, Robert of Fostoria, Ohio, and Harmon M. Gillig of Decatur; two sisters, Mrs. Aloysius (Agnes) Klosterman of Celina, Ohio, and Mrs. Cecilia Sheeters of Bascom, Ohio; and 16 grandchildren.
A Con-celebrated mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Bishop Leo Pursely, Rev. Msgr. Simeon Schmitt, and Rev. Donald, John and Gerald Gillig officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery.
Friends may call at the Gillig-Doan-Sefton funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Preferred memorials are to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Adams County Heart Fund.
