Admitted to the NY Bar at Batavia, he also practiced in Rochester before coming to Marshall in 1839. He became Circuit Judge of Calhoun County (the courthouse then located at the present site of Brooks Fountain) and later justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. In 1853 he became Chief Justice, a position he held until President Buchanan named him U.S. Consul to the Sandwich (now Hawaiian) Islands in 1857. Upon returning to Marshall in 1859 he made plans to build the unique Honolulu House as his residence. He was also a state legislator and Mayor of Marshall at the time of his death.
