James Neely McClure was born January 7, 1831, being the third white child born on the banks of the Ottawa river where the city of Lima now stands. Departed this life, February 23, 1904, aged seventy three years, one month and sixteen days.
He was united in marriage to Lucinda Rambaugh April 17, 1856, two years after he moved to Paulding county and settled on the old horse farm, where he remained till moving to town about two months ago. To this union were born four sons and two daughters, two sons and two daughters having proceeded him to the better world. He married a companion of forty eight years two months and fourteen days. Four brothers, one sister and a host of friends mourned his departure.
Mr. McClure was converted in boyhood. He with his father went through the forest to Defiance and secured the service of Rev Coffnets who came and organized a Methodist Class with Bro James and Margaret McClure his mother. Thomas German, Mary German, Martha and Sarah Jane Pegue, and Hannah Kohn, the present Methodist Class being the outgrowth of this organization. Bro James McClure was elected class leader which position he held until his hearing failed.
In 1862 when his eight weeks old boy died he told his wife, if she would assist, him he would keep up the family alter and live to meet the one gone before. That family alter has never been omitted for 44 year he had kept the alter up till his Heavenly Father said it was enough, come up higher. When on Tuesday morning, February 23rd at 5:25 o'clock he had dropped this robe of flesh to rise and shine in everlasting praise and shout while passing though the air "Farewell, Farewell, Sweet Hour of prayer" his hopes turned to fractious joys and he went to on to see those gone on before.
