Illustrious son of an illustrious father. A medical college graduate, he practiced in Trumansburg, NY before moving to Marshall in 1836. Built first brick business building in county, Comstock Block on Exchange Street.

Involved in Crosswhite affair in 1847 and convicted in Detroit Federal Court in 1848. Governor Barry (1842-44) appointed him acting Commissioner of Internal Improvements. Under his supervision Michigan Central Railroad was constructed from Jackson to Kalamazoo. One of the founders and second president of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society (1874) now known as Historical Society of Michigan.
