On December 31, 1868, Duncan McBride purchased for $800 a little over 49 acres from James and Martha Sauls. This acreage was located on a creek that became known as Mill Creek, due to the first industries begun in the Barberville area by Duncan. (Reference: Deed Book A., page 12.) As the years passed, additional acreage was added to his holdings. About 1872 Duncan donated land for the first church and cemetery in Barberville. Both became known by the name of Midway. He is credited with building the first church himself. It was now possible, since 1885, to ship oranges by rail as well as by steamboats from Volusia Landing. Most grove owners were enjoying a period of prosperity. Duncan J. McBride died May 30, 1894. His wife Delilah McRae McBride passed away January 4, 1889. Both are buried at Midway.
