The Tattnall Journal - December 22, 1927

John P. Rogers
__________

John P.Rogers,74 years of age, a pioneer citizen of Tattnall county and one of it's best known, died at his home here last Friday night between ten and eleven o'clock. He had been ill for many months before his death and it was not unexpected. Until about two years ago he had enjoyed his usual good health and was active in his habits and work, but weakness began to show and he was confined first to his home, then to his room, and for the past several weeks to his bed. Funeral services were conducted from Reidsville Methodist church at 11 o'clock Sunday morning by his pastor, Rev. J. Frank Spell, assisted by Rev. L.T. Rogers of Lumber City, a nephew of the deceased.
Surviving are the widow, and three children: H.E. Rogers, Miss Willaberta Rogers, and J.P. Rogers, Jr., all of this city. One brother, Dr. D.J. Rogers of Glennville and one sister, Mrs. J.P. Dickerson of Glennville, also survive besides a large number of more distant relatives.
Mr. Rogers was born and reared to manhood on the place now owned by W.S. Moseley, three miles north of Reidsville, and with the exception of about fourteen years spent in Savannah while a young man, all of his life was spent in this immediate community. For twenty-one years he and his family have operated the Rogers Hotel in this city, and this popular hosterlry is known far and wide, and he and his family with it. He was the son of the late Joe B. Rogers.

April 2, 1891 he was married to Miss Jennie Stripling and to this union five children were born, two of whom died in infancy.

Active pallbearers at the funeral were: S.M. McCall, H.P. Smith, W.G. Mauk, J.E. Newton, and L.M. Rhoden.
Honorary pallbearers were: Joe Copps, H.J. Brewton, J.V. Kelley, Jos. W. Smith, E.C. Strickland, and R.J. Rogers.
