Born to J. Clark (1804-?) & Lydia Clark (1804-?), but this has not been confirmed. He is probably a brother of Charles M. Clark (1842-1909; Memorial# 6827442), who also came to Texas from South Carolina.

William married Texana C. Felker on June 4, 1861, in Fairfield County, SC.

In 1862, he enlisted as a private in Company F of the 12th South Carolina Infantry in the Civil War. He received a significant leg wound in the Battle of Manassas (August 1862) that permanantly disabled him. He was discharged from service in 1863. He returned to service in 1864 and served until the war's end.

William and Texana moved from South Carolina to Avinger, Cass County, Texas in 1872. He was a farmer.

Three children:
• Williametta "Willie" Clark Brown (1863-1936)
• Lydia Eliza Clark Stewart Moss (1873-1952)
• Charles Edward Clark (1875-1949)
