Clarence Dean Powell, 92, died January 31, 1991, in a Vernal care center.

Born October 16, 1898, at Desert Lake, Emery County, to William James Powell, Jr., and Rachel Ann Hadden. Married Elsie Luella Chidester April 25, 1921, in Duchesne. Later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She died September 9, 1969. Married Mavis Kidd York June 1, 1970, in the Salt Lake Temple. Dean came to the Uintah Basin in 1904 with his widowed mother, a brother, and two sisters, to file on a homestead at what is now Hanna, Utah. He has been a resident of Duchesne since 1923. He held many civic and church positions, served as chief of Duchesne Fire Dept., Red Cross First Aid instructor, chairman of the Rationing Board during World War II, mail contractor for 50 years. At age 77, was elected to a four-year term as Justice of the Peace. He and his wife served two years on an Indian mission at Randlett, Utah, and served as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple. He was a counselor in the bishopric, stake and ward Sunday School superintendent, and High Priest Group leader.Survivors: Wife, Duchesne; three sons, Howard D., Vernal; Dr. Calvin J., Sidney, B.C., Canada; Richard W., South Jordan; four stepchildren, Carol Jean Robbins, Kimberly, Idaho; Lawrence J. York, of Vacaville, Calif.; Sherman R. York, Las Vegas; Phillip E. York, Hayward, Calif.; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine, parents, two brothers, two sisters.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Duchesne 3rd Ward Chapel, where friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial in the Duchesne Cemetery, under the direction of Olpin Hullinger Mortuary, Roosevelt.
