At the age of 19, Jerome Carter joined Company H of the Indiana Volunteers shortly after the war began but was discharged less than a year later in 1862 for a "disability," the details of which are not disclosed in Indiana muster records.

Jerome Carter, one of Porter county's most widely known citizens, died at his home in Valparaiso last Wednesday morning, Dec. 24th, of pneumonia. The deceased was taken down only two days before his death and so swift did the disease do its work that but few were prepared for for the sad news. The funeral was held on Friday in Valparaiso and was largely attended. In the demise of Jerome Carter, Porter county loses an enterprising citizen and a public-spirited man. His family have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends.
