U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Cherokee Male Seminary, in 1884 and was a teacher in the Cherokee Indian tribal schools, (1884-89). He was graduated from the law department of Vanderbilt University, in 1889, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He was attorney general for the Cherokee Nation, (1891-95) and national attorney for the Cherokee tribe, (1907-14). In 1915, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fourth, Sixty-fifth and Sixty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1921 and elected to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving (1923-35). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 22, 1936, as Chief of the Cherokees for one day to sign certain papers. He then resumed the practice of law until his death.
