William was the son of George & Ellen (Wright) Hewitt. At maturity, he stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.
In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Menallen Township, Adams County PA.
William married Susan Elizabeth Myers October 8, 1870, in Bendersville, Adams County, and fathered Ellen Teresa (b. 10/09/71), Emma Leona (b. 06/18/73), and Charles George (b. 12/16/74). Susan died December 26, 1874, in Adams County, and he married Susan Beamer.
He concocted and sold herbal medicines and was consequently known as "Dr. Hewitt," a title he apparently did not earn in any medical school. He was found dead and frozen on the floor of his home in Warrensville, Lycoming County, shortly after his return from his second home in Philadelphia, where he routinely wintered.
