Phillip moved to Cumberland County, Illinois in 1846 and homesteaded 175 acres near the Clark County, Illinois line.
Six children were born to Phillip and Nancy Redman Emrich: John, Mary, Sarah, Scott, Benjamin, and Taylor.

After his death Winfield Scott retained the family farm.
