He was born March 8, 1930, in Lima to Onard R. and Mildred L. Dunlap Ebling, who preceded him in death. On June 29, 1979, he married Bettye J. Mumma, who survives in Lima.
Mr. Ebling was a graduate of Lima Central High School, where he played football and excelled in track and field. He was a Navy veteran serving aboard the USS Blower, a submarine. He had worked at the Sohio Refinery and retired from Fidelity Building Supply. He had been an independent agent for Nationwide Insurance and owned The Clock Shop with his wife. He served the community in several roles, including as secretary of the Allen County Fair board, a member of the Bath School board, a Boy Scout leader and a volunteer firefighter on the Cairo Fire Department. He had served as mayor for the village of Cairo, when the modern-day main street was constructed. He was active in the Lions Club and a member of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54. He was a member of Westside United Methodist Church, Lima. He was a 50-year member of Fort Amanda Lodge 706 Free & Accepted Mason, served as eminent commander of Shawnee Commandry 14, had been a high priest of Lima Chapter 49 Royal Arch Masons and a member of Council 20 Royal & Select Masons.
Survivors also include three sons, Michael R. (Stephanie) Ebling, of Columbus Grove, Randall R. (Cindy) Ebling, of Findlay, and Scott E. (Barbara) Ebling, of Malabar, Fla.; two daughters, Diane M. (Max) Miller, of Cairo, and Lori A. (Kelly Six) Ebling, of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Acheson, of Lima; two brothers-in-law, Dick Rogers, of Rolla, Mo., and Jim Wright, of Wausau, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Wright and Pat Rogers; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Acheson.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. Pastor William G. Cronk will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275.
