Jerry Willis Bethea Sr., born May 29, 1924 in Mobile, a resident of Baldwin County most of his life, died peacefully Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at home in Fairhope. After serving in the Pacific during World War II with the Army Air Corps, he settled in Fairhope and spent 25 years working at the Grand Hotel, much of that time as resident manager. He was a devoted and active member of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope who will be remembered by all who knew him for his friendly, generous, attitude toward everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Nobles Bethea; and granddaughter, Jessica Leigh Bethea. Survivors include three children, John William (Victoria) Bethea of Fairhope, Jerry Willis (Vonne) Bethea Jr. of Fairhope, and Sheila Bethea (Donald) Ward of Point Clear; grandchildren, Jana Bethea (Trey) Fellers of Fairhope, Julie Bethea (Kyle) Morris of Montrose, Jennifer Bethea Iavarone of Tampa, Fla., Gigi Wesley (Houston) Lott of Fairhope, Katie Campbell Wesley of Daphne and William Redford Bethea of Fairhope; six great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at First Baptist Church of Fairhope. Interment will follow at Montrose Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church of Fairhope. Arrangements are by Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., Fairhope.
