Union Major Joseph C Willard married the famous Confederate daughter Antonia Ford. Antonia Ford was captured and arrested by Willard in Fairfax Va along with her father. He soon fell in love with her and thus worked for her release. They married in 1864, 7 months after her arrest. Major Willard resigned his commission March 10, 1864 with the Union. Antonia died 1871 and Joseph never remarried after her death. He died a recluse. A few facts on the family: Union Maj. Joseph C. Willard (owner of the famed Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C.) arrested and escorted "Antonia the spy" to the Old Capitol Prison. In 1900 their son (also named Joseph) gave the townspeople (of Fairfax VA) the impressive white colonnaded "Old Town Hall" building, which stands on the corner of University Drive and Main Street in Fairfax VA. Joseph and Antonia had three children, one mentioned above.
