Robert Bruce Cave(s) was born June 21, 1839, in Clark County, AL, the son of
John B. and Almena Cave, both of whom were born in SC.

Robert enlisted March 10, 1862, at Coffeeville, AL, as Private in Co. H, 32nd Alabama Infantry, CSA.
April 18 to June 30, 1862 he was absent for sick furlough
Aug. 31, 1863, he deserted between Enterprise and State Line Station
Nov. 25, 1863, he was captured at Missionary Ridge, TN, and confined at Rock Island, IL. In order to escape there, Robert enrolled Oct. 15, 1864, in Co. D, 3 Regiment, U. S. Infantry Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, at Rock Island, IL. His Regiment was sent into Kansas and Nebraska to do frontier service.

He was discharged honorably on Nov. 29, 1865, at Fort Levenworth, KS, and his discharge says "Private Robert B. Caves of Company D, 3rd U. S. Infantry Vols., was wounded in action with a band of hostile Indians near military station N. R. May 12, 1865, and displayed great coolness and gallantry during the entire action. F. Rehwinkel, Capt. 3d U. S. Infantry Volunteers Commanding Co. D.

Robert B. Caves was seriously wounded by being shot through the thigh with an arrow, and was unable to do duty for some weeks after."

His occupation was listed as farmer, and he lived in Wilcox County, AL until 1876, then
moved to Wood County, TX.

His height was 5 ft. 10 in. and weight 145 lbs., as of Aug. 28, 1906. He had
a small scar on the inside of his thigh, where he was shot with an arrow by an Indian, during the war.

He married Dyciann Chancy, daughter of James and Mary Chancy) June 21, 1862, in Clark County, AL.
Dyciann died Nov. 7, 1887, at Quitman, TX.

Robert married second to Martha Elizabeth Logan, daughter of Andrew J. and Salina V. Logan, Feb. 29, 1888, at Quitman TX.. She died Oct. 7, 1896.

Following the death of Martha, he married a third time, to Mrs.
Mary E. (Reece) Vaughn, widow of Rube Vaughn, March 13, 1898, in Quitman, TX. Mary had seven children by her first husband.

He died Oct. 20, 1920, and is buried in Quitman Cemetery, Quitman, TX.
