2nd son of Eber and Lydia Baker born in ME 11/8/1804 and died at Van Wert OH 10/22/1896. Buried at Marion OH. Married (1) Mary Anderson in Marion 3/20/1828. Mary was born 1/11/1809 in Guilford Co, NC. and died at Lima OH 8/2/1838. They had 3 children. Wife #2 was Tacey Thomas Anderson, (11/25/1809-11/05/1882) widow of James Anderson, the brother of Mary Anderson. She was the 3rd daughter of Abel Thomas, a prominent Quaker of Montgomery Co, PA. Tacey was born near Phenixville PA and died at Marion. Charles and Tacey had 4 children. Charles came to Marion in 1821 w/ his parents. He and his brother, George W Baker, sawed the lumber with a whipsaw and built the 1st house on the original town plat of Marion. He resided with his parents in this pioneer house for 7 yrs. In 1824, at the age of 20, he took charge of a tannery and in 1826, erected a tannery of his own near where Church and State streets are located now. He continued doing business there until 1830. In 1832 he moved to Lima OH and engaged in the merchantile business for 5 yrs. He was Lima's 1st postmaster, serving during the Jackson Administration. In 1835 he was Treasurer the Allen County. In 1839 he assumed the duties of clerk in the register of the U.S. Land Office and served 2 yrs there. In 1849, he returned w/ his family to Marion and engaged in merchandising. He was the executor of the will of Eber Baker. He had the distinction of being the longest-lived member of the Baker family at that time, living to age 92.
