Fountain City Man Dies After Drop Into Bay

Shock of Cold Water When Truck Breaks Through Ice Brings Death to Anton Duellman.

Companion, Carl Heitman, Rescued Him From Drowning.

Fountain City-(Special to The Republican-Herald)-

Saved from drowning in Fountain City bay when his gravel truck broke through the ice and went down in 20 feet of water Anton Duellman, 60 years old, died of shock shortly after he was carried home Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. Duellman and Carl Heitman, both residents of fountain City, were crossing the bay in a gravel laden truck about 3 p.m. when a rear wheel of the truck broke through the ice. The men both jumped, but when the truck did not immediately drop through the ice Mr. Duellman tried to put chains on the truck so that it could be pulled out. The men were hauling gravel in a county truck.

When he went near the machine the heavily-loaded truck crashed through the ice, taking Mr. Duellman with it. Mr. Heitman reached out to him with a shovel, which Duellman grasped. A third man, Clyde Brewer, helped Mr. Heitman get Mr. Duellman out of the water, and the two carried him to shore and to his home, which was within four or five blocks of the scene of the accident.

Dr. J. P. Reinhardt had been called, and he took charge of Mr. Duellman. The shock of his sudden immersion and exposure had been too great for Mr. Duellman, and he died a few minutes after he reached home. He had an old heart trouble, said Dr. Reinhardt.

Surviving are his wife, three sons and three daughters, and several brothers and sisters. The children are Raymond and W. H. Duellman, living in the town of Cross; Ferdinand, a resident of Illinois; Mrs. Lester Conrad, Otillia and Anna, Fountain City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
